Punk As A Doornail is an Orange County-born punk duo that started in 1999 as a noise project built from found-object instruments. The skatar became the band’s sonic backbone, driving their shift from pure noise art into a punk duo. The skatar is a custom skateboard guitar designed and played by vocalist/guitarist Keith Irish alongside drummer/vocalist Johnny Rage. Mr. Irish was never a good skater, which sparked the thought, “What if the skateboard could be strung and played?”
Punk As A Doornail pays tribute to the raw spirit of 1970s–1980s punk rock not by covering old songs, but by honoring their originality. The first wave of punk had their own sound where you could identify which band you were listening to within seconds. Punk As A Doornail sounds like no one else.
Over the years, Punk As A Doornail transformed from a noisy art project into a sharpened punk duo. Their catalog includes releases such as Flogging the Punk Horse (2009), Suck 4 Cash (2010), Sleeping in My Piss (2011), and the self‑released Dead As A Sad Snail (2021), along with their most recent album Paddle Boat Spring Park (digital 2024; vinyl arrived February 2026).
With a quarter century of reinvention, a signature instrument, and a reputation for unpredictable live performances, Punk As A Doornail continues to embody what punk was always meant to be: loud, inventive, and unmistakably unique.

This is the skatar, which is a skateboard guitar that Keith Irish designed for this band.
